(More customer reviews)This is intended to be an introduction to Magic: The Gathering for someone who has never played before. In the past, starter products like this had a couple of playable decks and a nice rule booklet; you and a friend could have fun playing real games with your decks for awhile and then decide whether to buy more cards.

This set comes with only two booster packs and some land, which is not really enough to have a decent game with - you run out of cards after just a few turns. And because the cards provided are random boosters, some of them don't even make sense when you have so few cards in your deck. A few times through the cards and you'll have exhausted the play potential of this set and have nothing to do except go buy some other products.

Instead of a rule booklet, this product gives you a giant poster with play instructions on it. It is well done, but is much less convenient than a compact booklet format would be. I doubt many people will be keeping this poster at hand to refer to as they learn to play.

My recommendation for new players who don't have a friend or family member to teach them is to buy a couple Tenth Edition theme decks, and get the rules booklet in pdf form from the Magic website. The theme decks will cost you a few extra dollars, but you will actually be able to play with them a number of times as you are learning.

I think this would be particularly disappointing to buy for a young child as a gift. It's very little fun as a stand-alone product, and if you need to go out and buy more cards to play the game anyway, might as well start with the other products to begin with.
